LO5.2 Be Able to Edit Cinematic Quality Footage

In order to make sure that this film looks and feels as much like a horror as possible needed to make sure the post production editing techniques were on par with what we wanted the film to feel like.

First of all I had to rearrange all of the clips together in order to make it all smooth and link together. Then what I had to do was trim the clips down to make the clips and the dialogue flow better.

Because our film is a horror I wanted it to have a dark and gritty vibe. In the first few scenes we shot in a very lit room whereas the other scenes with the monster were shot in low light with minimum light. Because the two were so different I needed to go back and color grade the first few scenes. In order to achieve a horror vibe I firstly toned down the exposure slightly to make the whites less brighter and then fully turned down the highlights and then made the shot a little bit colder.

As well as that in one of the main scenes where Ben dies was shot as a POV shot and he took a while to walk around and I could tell that the viewers started to not pay attention so to fix this I sped up the clip from 100% to 115% and added some foot step sound effects which kept the viewer more engaged.

Also in the scene where Amin and TJ first see the monster eating the corpses they pull a shocked expression but because it was shot in low light you could not fully see their faces to I added in a zoom effect which made the viewer focus more on their faces and really see how shocked they were.

During the post production phase, music and sound was one of the most important parts in order to engage the audience and make the scenes tense. The first thing I did was go on royalty free sound effects and pick one main theme to go along in the back ground in more of the laid back scenes and then when there was an upcoming death scene I picked a more intense song and as the scene intensified I edited the decibels to go more high pitch and really exemplify what was going on in the scene. The third and final song I used was near the final act when the monster was chasing Amin and TG and it was a really loud irritating violin sound which got gradually louder as the scene intensified.

As well as music I also used royalty free sound effects. An example was when the monster was eating the corpses instead of just having nothing in the background I added a breaking bones sound effect and a blood squirting sound effect which made the viewer seem more disturbed whilst watching it. Another main sound effect I added it was a short sharp jump scare sound and this made the jump scares a lot more intense and I gradually increased the decibels as the monster got closer towards the victims.
